攻殻機動隊 Ghost in the Shell: Arise

コーネリアス『GHOST IN THE SHELL: ARISE』

I may be a little behind this piece of news (little being a gross understatement) about the latest prequel to the GTIS franchise, but late news is probably better than none – especially for a series that has been my favorite since the first animated feature film.
Unlike the Stand Alone Complex series, ARISE features an entirely new cast of seiyus (Sakamoto Maaya 坂本真綾 voices the Major instead of Tanaka Atsuko 田中敦子) in a setting that takes place before the original in the first movie. It is also a four-part OVA series which is released theatrically instead of television. Our favorite characters from Public Security Section 9 have also undergone some sort of a makeover, with the Major looking slightly more tomboyish. The characters were designed by neither Okiura Hiroyuki 沖浦啓之 nor Shimomura Hajime 下村一, but Kise Kazuchika 黄瀬和哉, who is also directing this series.

I couldn’t find a group shot of Public Security Section 9 from the original movie, so this is as good as I could find. However you can also see a more detailed comparison of the character designs here

While I haven’t heard much about this series (things are moving pretty slowly on this side of the world, dang), the animation sequence based on the trailer alone is something worth getting excited about. Given the more uber-futuristic theme, Cornelius (or Oyamada Keigo 小山田圭吾, the man behind the stage name) has also been tasked to succeed Kanno Yoko 菅野よう子 to provide the music. And based on the above video, it’s sounding pretty good. Can’t say the same for the current theme song though, which takes a little getting used to.

Also kudos to Microsoft for jumping in on the fray for a thrilling 3-minute short film featuring the latest Surface notebook/tablet hybrid (I will personally always prefer the Mac though. Can’t stop from hoping they’re working on something better!).
I guess with the plethora of reviews on Border 1 alone, my post is mostly redundant. But I won’t spoil the story for myself and come back with a better understanding of it when I’m done.
