Anyone familiar with Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki Hayao has got to know about “Kiki’s Delivery Service” (魔女の宅急便) and Kiki’s journey into creating a life of her own in an unfamiliar town.
I’m not sure who came up with the idea of a live action film, but the trailer was released a few days ago. Clearly this is going ahead. The movie is supposed to be a re-adaptation of the original animation, although methinks the plot has been somewhat reimagined into a different story altogether. Even Kiki’s signature red bow is missing from her head (wait, it’s her belt now?). And what is with that fake rainbow?!
The movie stars Koshiba Fuka (小芝風花) and is directed by Shimizu Takashi (清水 崇). That’s right. A beloved children’s story is directed by the man behind The Grudge.
I’m not about to go spoof Kiki has a begrudging ghost even though she’s a witch, but that match doesn’t sit well with me. Nonetheless, there’s still time to think about the movie before it debuts in theaters March 1 next year.
So THAT’S where Jiji went!
