2015: A 30-day anime blog challenge squeezed into one post

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! May this year bring you much joy, comfort, hope and strength to get through those highs and lows with the right people into your lives!

But seriously, happy new year.
But seriously, happy new year.

I’ve been working on this post since yesterday, but being New Year’s Eve yesterday, I stayed out with friends to chill with and watch Jurassic Park with the kids (completely ruining all hopes for a quiet night alone).

It’s been suggested to me that I consider writing topics that are more lighthearted. Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (“Your Lie in April”) immediately sprang to mind, but unfortunately even though I love the plot (it does throw me back to the Nodame years), there’s really nothing much to say about that show other than its sweet, coming-of-age story of four young teenagers. If I see something more, I’ll be sure to write about it!

But I did stumble across this 30-day anime blog challenge which could really be whittled down to just one post. Score! And I realize that other than the “About” page, you probably know nothing about me. So here goes:

Very first anime – Technically, it could have been either Doraemon or Nintama Rantarou, but I have no recollection of the first episode I watched. They were dubbed in Mandarin too. I understood nothing.

"Nintama Rantarou"
“Nintama Rantarou”

Favorite anime you’ve watched so far – Tough! There’re so many of them, but if I had to choose, I would rewatch Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex in a heartbeat.

Your anime crush – Levi Ackerman of Shingeki no Kyojin. I used to really like Shuusei Kagari of Psycho Pass until he got killed off. His character death was the first that I got really affected by. I’m still upset he had to go.

Levi Ackerman, "Shingeki no Kyojin" - but really, does he even need any introduction??

Anime you’re ashamed you enjoyedOuran High School Host Club. So retarded, but so addictive. Azumanga Daioh comes a close second.

Anime character you feel you are most like (or wish you were) – I don’t have a specific character, but I like women with similar traits: strong, initiated, speaks normally (and not through some forced high nasal pitch), and does not fit the typical “beautiful fighting girl” stereotype. This is why Ghost in the Shell and Psycho Pass are among my classic favorites.

Most annoying anime character – as of late, Kana Kimishima of Parasyte. But she’s dead, which is excellent. Shinji Matou (Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works) comes a very close second at this point. If the objective is to make him as big of an asshole as possible, then Type-Moon has done a fabulous job at it.

Favorite anime couple – Yato and Hiyori Iki of Noragami. Nothing’s been confessed yet, but #1. Hiyori asks never to be separated from him or Yukine; #2. she built his first and very own shrine for him – by hand; and #3. she makes Yato a better person without him realizing it in her own way. That’s what all couples should do: make each other better to become one fantastic person as a pair.

Most epic scene ever – Anime is FULL of epic scenes. Spirited Away has plenty of scenes that are epic in its own way, but the earliest I can remember are those of Spriggan.

I mean, this video isn’t even the most epic, but it was pretty darn amazing to watch back in the early 2000’s.

Saddest anime scene – Ghibli’s House of the Fireflies is just full of sad. Thought-provoking, but sad to the point of depression. I told myself never to watch it again.

Favorite slice of life anime – The current Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso is the best I’ve seen in the last three years, but Nodame Cantabile and Toradora! are pretty good too. SKET DANCE! was also very good and well paced, but it might be better suited for those who appreciate slapstick comedy.

Favorite mech seriesEvangelion was amazing, groundbreaking in its time. Knights of Sidonia however, takes the cake for me.

An ecchi picture from your favorite series – Ecchi pictures mean having to watch Ecchi anime. Ecchi anime means zero plot. I hate shows with no plot.

Cosplay of your ‘Waifu’ or Husbando’ – No husband, but I’ll show off my new (and totally legit) PROPLICA Dominator when it arrives!

Current (or most recent) anime wallpaper – I prefer landscape anime wallpaper to character wallpaper. Landscape art is way too underrated. Here’s my favorite:

Post a cute Neko-girl – No.

Post a kigurumi (wide-eyed mask) cosplay of your favorite anime character – Also… no.

Favorite tsundere – There are none. They are annoying as hell. They will never be my friend.

Something moe

Can't go wrong with K-ON!
Can’t go wrong with K-ON!

Mandatory swimsuit post – This is not a porn site.

Favorite shoujo anime – You ask a difficult question. But I suppose Ouran High School Host Club will have to do.

Best yandere (a sick romantic) character – What behavior would I be endorsing here?!

Favorite boy’s love couple (or yuri couple) – If by same-sex couples, you mean couples that actually get it on, then I really can’t think of any (I never watch those anyway). The closest that come to mind are Nine and Twelve (brothers by circumstance) from Terror in Resonance and Nana and Nana/Hachi (fated roommates) from Nana.

Anime you think had the best, or most intriguing art – Anime art design has improved so much in the last five years (just look at everything that’s been released in 2014). Quality that used to be found only in full-length feature films are now a staple in half-hour series. But technological advancements aside, I think Paprika was ahead of its time. That movie is full of crazy.

Favorite anime hero or heroine – The Ghibli girls – Princess Mononoke, Kiki, Chihiro/Sen (Spirited Away) were very remarkable. The Jinnouchi household of Summer Wars are also a noteworthy mention.

"Summer Wars"
“Summer Wars”

Best anime villain – Psychotic creeps like Shougo Makishima (Psycho Pass) notwithstanding, all the villains of Sailormoon were complete assholes. Silly-looking idiots, but assholes all around.

Your favorite harem anime – Ouran is the only one that comes close, and that’s really hardly “harem” in my book.

Favorite anime opening theme song“unravel” by TK from ling tosite sigure for Tokyo Ghoul. It may be a stretch for me to hope that amazarashi will top this when Season 2 starts next Thursday.

Favorite pokemon – Pikachu – but only because he’s the only one I know.

Favorite school uniform – I don’t watch enough shows to see enough uniforms, so in my head, they all look the same.

Anime character you want to cosplay – I think Natsuki’s OZ avatar (Summer Wars) would be pretty fun! Then I’ll go around inviting people to play koi koi with me.

Natsuki Shinohara (“Summer Wars”)
