First Impressions: WWW.Working!!, Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru, Bungou Stray Dogs 2, Haikyuu!! Karasuno vs Shiratorizawa, Occultic; Nine

It was nice that the finale of some of the shows in the previous season ended on different weeks, so it felt like there was no “break” in the momentum in between.

Jumping right into Fall’s line-up, here are my thoughts on the ones that I originally shortlisted, and then some.

First Episode : 1 October

First Impression: Takanashi Souta’s cameo right at the get-go crossing paths with new character Higashida Daisuke is a firm nod to the work of the original cast and characters, and felt like an official, proper handover to a new generation of staff at Wagnaria.

It was quite clear that the series’ creators tried to preserve what Working!! is known for: an unassuming family restaurant in a Hokkaido suburb helmed by a motley crew of quirky, eccentric but unique crew. However unlike the original series–where it was almost immediatley clear that original characters Takanashi and Inami had serious character flaws to work out–there seems to be a lack of focus on what the primary issue is. WWW.Working!! has some challenges ahead of them–retaining the interest of the old Working!! fans while appealing to some in its viewership who are unfamiliar with the franchise.

Rating: 7/10

touken-hanamaruTouken Ranbu: Hanamaru

First Episode: 2 October

First impression: Two words: Gyaku Harem. Swords given human-like personalities that are a little too over the top for my liking. Also no discernable content or direction.

Rating: 3/10 (dropped)

Bungou Stray Dogs 2bungou-2-01

First Episode: 5 October

First Impression: Starting the second season with a peek into Dazai Osamu’s past life with the Port Mafia felt a little sudden. But I’m certainly not complaining. The animation is flawless, with voice acting chops to match (Miyano Mamoru, Suwabe Junichi, Fukuyama Jun). We saw Dazai’s comedic, carefree side for the first 12 episodes; now we see the side of him that is sinister, sadistic, and twisted.

Rating: 8.5/10

haikyuu-shiratorizawaHaikyuu: Karasuno Koukou vs Shiratorizawa Gakuen Koukou

First Episode: 7 October

First Impression: Thanks to the title, we know exactly what to expect from this show for the rest of the season. If you don’t like to see two teams battling it out for at least 12 episodes (it could be 24, based on the past two seasons), then this show is definitely not for you.

But aside from the fact that this show has managed to make volleyball pretty exciting to watch, the character development has been well sustained, not just for the two protagonists but the other characters as well.

It’s hard to imagine what Haikyuu!! could poassibly come up with for a match between two teams for the next three months at least, but we’ll see how long it keeps my attention.

Rating: 7.5/10

Occultic; Nine:

First Episode: 8 October

First Impression: I didn’t pick this up at first, but after hearing that this was among the top picks of the season, I gave it a try. I love supernatural, and I love fantasy. This show is right up my alley.

The animation felt like it belonged to a really elaborate animated music video.

My complaint: fast talkers–some of the dialogue felt rushed and a little unnatural.

My other complaint: unrealistic water balloons for boobs. Unnecessary fan service that we really should go without. Those boobs are crying for surgical help. Her owners must have serious back problems.

Rating: 7.5/10

Other Shows I’m Waiting for: Ajin 2, Luger Code 1951, Fune wo Amu
